Members of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have uploaded a video on a popular pro-Israeli Telegram channel showing an IDF bulldozer intentionally running over the body of a Palestinian civilian.
The Telegram channel has over 130,000 followers, many of whom commented on the video by making fun of the civilian dying and being crushed.
According to a report from Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, the victim had sought refuge from Israeli violence by using the “safe corridor” along Salah al-Din Street, a main road in the Gaza Strip. This corridor, allegedly allocated by the Israeli army for the use of displaced Palestinian civilians, was meant to facilitate travel from North Gaza to the supposed safety of the southern part of the Strip. Tragically, the man was shot and killed before becoming the deliberate target of the bulldozer.
Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor vehemently denounced the IDF’s brazen admission of mutilating the bodies of the deceased, along with the publication of video clips showcasing the appalling practices. The organization interprets these acts as clear evidence of the IDF’s sadism and a blatant violation of the rules of war.
The IDF has a long history of using its military bulldozers to run over civilians – including an American. In 2003, the IDF intentionally ran over American peace activist Rachel Corrie, who was protesting against the deliberate destruction of Palestinian homes in the Gaza Strip.
Back then, the 23-year-old Corrie had been actively involved with the Palestinian-led International Solidarity Movement, dedicating her life to protesting Israeli actions in the region. At that time, Corrie participated in the televised mock trial of then-President George H.W. Bush in Gaza. The former president was accused of war crimes for his alleged support of Israel’s actions. “She was raising her hands and yelling at the bulldozer driver to stop. The bulldozer driver paid no attention. He buried Rachel with dirt, which ended up, obviously, knocking her down. Then he ran over her, and then reversed and ran over her again,” said Palestinian-American peace activist Huwaida Arraf.
On the other side of the story, some claimed that Corrie was out of sight of the bulldozer operator. However, Alice, a member of the organization from London, shared that she and Corrie sat in front of their friends’ houses for about three hours. The bulldozer driver must have seen them, but they still drove over Corrie. Alice even said that Corrie emerged from under the bulldozer and said, “My back is broken. My back is broken.”
Tom Dale, who was about 10 yards away, made another statement, saying Corrie was visible and wearing an orange jacket. The bulldozer moved forward, lifting a pile of earth, and caught Corrie under its blade.
Instead of taking responsibility, the IDF labeled the incident “very regrettable,” blaming the protesters for putting everyone in danger by intentionally placing themselves in a combat zone. Activists, however, assert the use of nonviolent tactics and reject the notion that Corrie’s death was an accident.
Just like how the IDF uploaded its video of running over a lifeless Palestinian civilian to be a laughing stock on the internet, the Israelis also celebrated Corrie’s death by throwing “pancake parties” to mock her killing.
