Ukraine’s southwestern neighbor Hungary has pledged to offer a safe haven for Ukrainians dodging Kyiv’s draconian military draft.
Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen reiterated this pledge during a May 6 interview. He told broadcaster ATV that Budapest “would not extradite refugees to Ukraine.” Many Ukrainian men are leaving the country to escape military conscription, which under a new law condemns them to their deaths in the meat grinder of war against Russia.
“We do not investigate whether, according to the Ukrainians, the person is conscripted or not,” said Semjen. “Based on basic humanity, we will not allow them to be sent to their deaths. Every refugee from Ukraine is completely safe with us and receives all the help.”
Russia Today (RT) wrote that “in recent weeks, the Ukrainian government has attempted to pressure its citizens who left the country – particularly those living in the European Union – to return home.” While Kyiv has asked officials in Brussels to support this effort, many “have been reluctant to cooperate.” Even Poland and Germany, both staunch supporters of Ukraine, have refused to hand over refugees and have vowed to protect their rights.
“In recent months, Ukraine has also stepped up efforts to compensate for losses on the battlefield by increasing its mobilization drive within the country. Last month, [Ukrainian] President Volodymyr Zelensky signed two bills into law – one lowering the draft age for men from 27 to 25, and another significantly simplifying the draft process,” continued RT. “In an effort to force Ukrainians of fighting age to return home, Ukrainian consulates abroad … announced the ‘temporary suspension’ of services to men between the ages of 18 and 60, who can no longer receive any necessary documents until they return home. A Washington Post report … suggested that many Ukrainians living in the West are angered by the new policy, saying they feel they are being treated like traitors and potential prey for conscription officials.”
According to Eurostat, the bloc’s statistics agency, 4.3 million Ukrainians were living in the EU as of January. Around 860,000 of this number are men of fighting age.
Mac Slavo of SHTF Plan lauded the Hungarian deputy prime minister’s pledge in a May 6 story. He wrote: “It’s difficult to find anyone in the ruling class concerned about humanity and morality, but it’s nice to know those feeling obvious slavery can find at least some relief.
“We all know the rulers start the wars, but aren’t the ones who will be fighting them. They have always demanded a blood sacrifice from the slaves. Whether it’s conscription, a draft or anything else – forcing another human to kill or be killed is the absolute height of enslavement of human beings.
“The idea that anyone is free while ruling classes (governments) of any kind exist is becoming less and less of an illusion every day. Even the most numb statists are figuring out that freedom means no one else has authority or control over you or your property.
“It’s a slow process, but it’s coming along. The more brutal the masters become, the faster the people are going to figure it out too. That could be the only good news.”
