Another refugee camp, this one including a school run by the United Nations (UN), was bombed by Israel this week resulting in at least 40 deaths.
According to reports, the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza contained an educational center run by UNRWA. Israeli bombs killed at least nine women and 14 children while wounding 74 others.
The attack occurred around 2 a.m. in the early morning hours of June 6. People sheltering there woke up to the sound of airstrikes and at least one building that was set ablaze by Israeli weapons.
“The whole school was sleeping,” said one eyewitness by the name of Ansam Issa. “We ran out and we saw people retrieving the wounded and dead bodies from the rubble. Some were torn apart, some were burnt.”
“My 17-year-old brother came running towards me, shouting that our father was dead. I asked him about our two other brothers: He said, they were killed, too.”
Issa and her family sought out the school just one day before the bombing after heavy Israeli bombing took out the Bureij refugee camp where they had previously been sheltering.
Relative Um Mohammed Issa commented that the entire family was forced to flee their homes within the camp several times in the days leading up to the attack.
“We shelter in one school they strike it. We shelter in another they burn it. We go to our home and they bomb it over our heads. We go to the street we find dead people, and torn bodies,” Una Mohammed.
“People don’t know where to go anymore.”

Like it always claims, Israel is insistent that the bombing was necessary because Hamas militants were hiding inside the refugee camp and school. An entire Hamas camp within the camp, Israel claims, is partially responsible for the October 7 attack.
Anywhere from 20 to 30 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters allegedly gathered at the UN school, at least according to Israel. Those sheltered at the facility, however, deny such claims.
“They’re saying they were targeting fighters – what fighters?” Ansam said. “We don’t have any weapons. We came here for safety with nothing but our tents and the clothes on our backs.”
Gaza’s media office says the same, rejecting Israel’s claim that Hamas militants were hiding out inside the “safe zone.”
“The occupation uses lying to the public opinion through false fabricated stories to justify the brutal crime it conducted against dozens of displaced people,” said Ismail al-Thawabta, the office’s director.
In response, Israel claims it took “many steps” to avoid the loss of “uninvolved people” who have nothing to do with the October 7 attack.
The attack occurred not long after Israel announced that it was sending the IDF back to central Gaza to carry out another mission. Israel continues to state that it will not agree to any ceasefire until it completes its mission.
“The movement and factions of the resistance will deal seriously and positively with any agreement that is based on a comprehensive ending of the aggression and the complete withdrawal and prisoners swap,” said Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh about the matter.
The Biden regime presented a ceasefire plan that was agreed to by Hamas, but Israel is rejecting it. “Defeating Hamas,” Israel claims, necessitates continued airstrikes and other attacks.
